What’s Up In Manitoba?

A few years ago, we published a paper (Ball et al., IJPO, 2010) that included data from a national environmental scan of health services for managing pediatric obesity in Canada. This modest start has led to some great collaborations since. More recently, this approach was replicated by Marie-France Langlois (Université de Sherbrooke) and her team who reported the results of a nation-wide inventory of programs for managing obesity in adults. Currently, the next step is being led by Kristy Wittmeier (University of Manitoba) who just received word that her grant application to the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba was successful.

Over the next year, Kristy and her team will be (1) characterizing Manitoba-based programs dedicated to preventing and managing childhood obesity; (2) updating our original national environmental scan; and (3) interviewing a handful of long-standing pediatric weight management clinics in Canada and the US to glean insights into their development, evolution and keys to success. Collectively, these data will identify gaps and opportunities to address childhood obesity in Manitoba. Best of luck, Kristy!
