With data from our multi-centre Should I Stay or Should I Go? study, we recently published a paper in Obesity Research & Clinical Practice describing reasons why families drop out of pediatric weight management clinics.
As part of her MSc research, which also included an integrative review of attrition on the topic, Jasmine Dhaliwal and our team analyzed qualitative data from parents living in Vancouver, Edmonton, and Hamilton. While all families initiated health services for managing pediatric obesity, they also discontinued their care prematurely (pdf available below).
Now that a number of factors and issues have been characterized, the next step is to develop and test interventions to see if families can remain engaged in their care for a longer period to optimize the likelihood that they gain benefits that are most meaningful to them.
