Weight Watchers for Teens: Few Details, Lots of Controversy

Over the past few weeks, Weight Watchers received a lot of attention in the media (see HERE, HERE and HERE) after they announced their to-be-released program for teens, which will be available free-of-charge for a period of time.

Although Weight Watchers might be one of the most well-researched commercial weight loss programs for adults, applying their model directly to teens had raised a number of questions and concerns (e.g., focus on weight vs health; marketing to a vulnerable population), especially since details of their teen model are not yet available.

For a thoughtful discussion of a range of issues, our colleague Dr. Tracey Bridger (Janeway Child Health Centre and Memorial University, St. John’s, NL) was one of 3 guests on CBC’s The Current this morning (the conversation begins at ~22 minutes).
